I've been teaching since 2000, and enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities.
As well as being a peripatetic teacher with Bristol Beacon, The Downs School and Tockington Manor School, I also offer private lessons to individuals or small groups. I have taken students through all levels of graded exams, with a current focus on the Trinity Rock and Pop syllabus.
Whether you’re looking to pass exams or are simply learning for pleasure, I can offer bespoke lessons, specifically tailored to your needs and capabilities. Common topics include timing (playing to click), developing grooves and fills, playing songs, perfecting hand and foot technique, rudiments, reading and writing notation, musical styles, playing by ear and creating parts for songs.
I hold a full DBS certificate and am able to teach in person or via Zoom for those wishing to learn remotely.
Rates are £40 per hour or £20 for a 30-minute lesson.
Testimonials
'My daughter has been loving her lessons with Greg. She has been having her lessons via zoom during the lockdown and is still making amazing progress. Greg is patient and clear with his teaching and constantly encouraging her and keeping her focused. She thinks he is the coolest teacher and is very proud to show friends and family the fact she can already play the drum beats in 'real rock songs!' Katherine, mum of Sophia
Greg has worked at St. Bede's Catholic College for over 15 years and he is a highly regarded member of staff at the school. Greg provides our students with first-rate tuition and he plans his lessons thoroughly to ensure his students make rapid progress in their learning. Greg's friendly disposition allows him to foster strong relationships with his students and colleagues. Thanks for all that you do at St. Bede's, Greg! James Lewis- Head of Music, St Bede's School
'I came to Greg in 2013, when I started my PhD at UCL as I wanted to explore the concept of rhythm. I had no intention of sitting behind a drum kit. Fast-forward a few years and I’m playing professional gigs, have performed with a number of bands and orchestras and music is a central focus for my thesis. Greg’s knowledge of and enthusiasm for his subject is utterly infectious and I’m certain that if I’d have asked anybody else for help all those years ago, I’d have never discovered the joys of drumming or experienced the pleasure of playing music to a live audience. I’m so incredibly grateful to Greg for his patience (I’d never even sat on a drum stool when I started lessons), persistence (I was a very reticent student) and for passing on a passion for music that has become such an integral part of my life now. I can’t recommend him highly enough.' Catherine
'Greg White has provided drum tuition at Tockington Manor School for around 8 years. He is reliable and informative. He has given me a lot of advice about the technical aspects of drumming, sound recording, soundproofing and the specific drum kit and parts required to play. I have also witnessed an inspirational drum demonstration he provided at our school assembly - Greg is mind-blowingly good at performing! Over his time with us he has successfully prepared pupils for their Trinity Drum exams and uses backing tracks to motivate them to practise. He regularly performs all over Bristol and beyond as a member of several bands. All in all, he is a very talented and knowledgeable drum teacher.' Katie Sapkota, Head of Music at Tockington Manor School
'Over the course of 5 years of drumming lessons with Greg, lessons have taken various forms; peripatetic group sessions in school, 1:1 tuition in our home and 1:1 tuition via Zoom. Greg has been instrumental in moving Oscar from curious novice to skilled, drum obsessed teenager! Greg has tailored lessons to suit Oscar's needs and interests with carefully planned lessons and gentle encouragement. I wholeheartedly recommend him as a drumming teacher.' Wendy, mum of Oscar
